Methodology
Selection
The index covers 3,355 organisations in Switzerland. On the business side these are around 1,000 large companies, selected by revenue and headcount and complemented by banks and insurers (balance sheet, premiums), hospitals, public enterprises, pension funds and their service providers. The public sector is covered too: the federal administration with its offices and courts, all cantonal administrations, universities, intercantonal bodies and the municipalities listed in the official FSO register, where a mail domain of their own could be found. Each organisation is assessed on its primary mail domain, the domain behind its employees' addresses. Groups that communicate via a global domain appear with that domain.
What is checked
- MX with IP addresses, network operator (ASN) and country of each IP, plus TLSA records per host
- SPF including recursive evaluation of all includes: DNS lookup count (limit 10), void includes, ptr, width of authorised IPv4 ranges, detected sending services
- DMARC: p, sp, np, pct, alignment, rua/ruf, report services and authorisation of external report receivers per RFC 7489
- DKIM: 100 common selectors; key type, key length, testing flag, CNAME delegation
- MTA-STS: TXT record and the publicly published policy file (mode, max_age, MX coverage)
- TLS-RPT, BIMI (incl. mark certificate), DNSSEC and DANE
- Verification records in the domain TXT (which cloud services the domain has verified)
Who runs the mail?
Provider detection weighs several independent signals: MX hosts, SPF includes, DKIM delegation, Autodiscover, domain verifications, the network operator of the MX servers and Microsoft's public realm lookup (Entra ID tenant, tenant region). Upstream filters such as Proofpoint, Cisco, SEPPmail or Swisscom are shown separately as gateways; the actual mailbox provider is determined behind them. Each classification carries a confidence from 0 to 100.
The jurisdiction follows the provider's headquarters, not the data centre location: the US CLOUD Act applies to US providers even when the data is stored in Switzerland. For self-hosted mail the country of the MX servers applies.
Scoring model
The score matches the Mail DNS Check and ranges from 0 to 100. Grades: A from 85, B from 65, C from 40, D below. BIMI deliberately does not count because it only affects display.

Updates
A workflow re-checks every domain daily. When a company's DMARC, SPF, DKIM, MTA-STS, TLS-RPT, DNSSEC, BIMI, provider or grade changes, it appears in the list of changes and in the company's history. Short DNS outages do not count as a deterioration: if a domain cannot be reached during a run, the last known state is kept.
Passive and public
Only what every mail server queries during delivery anyway is retrieved: public DNS records (via DNS over HTTPS), the publicly published MTA-STS policy and Microsoft's realm lookup. There is no SMTP connection, no login attempt and no port or vulnerability scan.
Limitations
- DKIM keys under unknown selectors remain invisible. "No DKIM found" therefore does not necessarily mean that no signature exists.
- The index rates the main domain. Other brand or country domains of a company may be configured better or worse.
- Headcounts are rounded estimates and only determine the size of the map dots.
